For my first project experiment, I will be utilizing an analytical argument essay from English 125 as my base. The essay is based on a picture of the decrepit Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn in the middle of the night. While most of the picture is dark, the factory is partially illuminated by moonlight poking through the clouds as well as cars driving on the nearby Williamsburg Bridge. I argued that the light symbolizes improving opportunity and development in the area; later, I delved into how the Factory has been re-purposed as a multi-use facility, the adjacent waterfront has been modernized into a recreational area, and the surrounding neighborhoods have flourished with newfound work, housing, and cultural immersion.

Being that the area used to be run-down and impoverished, then it later evolved around the Factory’s restructuring, I decided to repurpose this paper into an expose on Detroit’s shift in stature following the development and re-purposing of new properties- Specifically the Shinola Hotel and the Detroit Club. This project engages me specifically through my captivation in real estate development and positive societal change. Along with these two, I intend on visiting and interviewing adjacent businesses that have been around for a while- I want to receive and analyze their perspective on Detroit’s evolution as well as the Shinola Hotel and Detroit Club’s piece of it.

Paralleling this, I find my topic especially compelling and convenient in that Detroit is only a 30-45 minute drive from Ann Arbor. On another note, the Shinola Hotel recently opened and has been polarizing the vibe of Downtown Detroit with its rustic exterior, modern inside, acclaimed restaurants, and unique amenities. While this eclectic, upscale hang-out spot is new, the Detroit Club is a historical building that undergoes constant modernizing upgrades and tasteful modifications. This experiment is geared towards varying audiences; I feel as if those who visit Detroit frequently or have family near there will be impacted the most directly, while indirectly appealing to those with a knack for social change, development, and overall progress.

Additionally, this experiment is personable in that I love exploring new cities and areas. Being from Boca Raton, Florida, my home city is Miami. From going to Miami Heat games since I was little to going to museums today, I have been amazed at seeing how the city has transformed formerly dangerous areas into art districts, skate parks, and familial recreational areas. Beyond myself, this experiment will speak to cities all over the country that have underdeveloped and impoverished neighborhoods, bringing a sense of hope and patience to their respective shift to a new age.
